That commencementaddress was in 2005 and in his commencement speech hespoke on three stories of his; connecting the dots story, love and lost story and the death story. This then made me to check out another video of him introducing the iphone in 2007 (http://youtu.be/MnrJzXM7a6o) and the gist of how smart and easy to use the gadget he talked about, iphone, was got me thinking of how vital of an educational tool we have on our hands as students. This device as well as many other smart phones is a great revolutionary product which can help students in their educational careersThe device’s capacity to run many applications, internet and other software programs are indeed geared towards providing the customers, well in this case, the students with an awesome learning experience that will help accelerate their education as they will be open to a world of research and easy access to information. I quickly flashed down memory lane to several years ago when I had to leave the house to a road side internet provider (Cyber café) to brows the net or do a research. I would some time spend days looking for someone with a computer to beg and use to type out my projects and articles for School. I even went as far as creating an email account which I would use to chart with my relative abroad to get study materials from them. Every time we had to have a group work at the universityI must meet up with my classmates in person and this was costly as I lived very far away from the University campus. Flow of information from one student to another was a very slow and demanding task as not everyone had a laptop, not everyone had a USB key and certainly internet was very expensiveback then and checking your email everyday was a real luxury. Often at times one will depend on analogue phones whose capacity to share information such as files and videos were very low.

    This was only a few of the many challenges I faced as a student back then. Even to do research you could only go to the library for info and if it’s not there you will need to find elsewhere. That’s the opposite of today’s world where one can just glance through the internet and social media and find and endless source of information. Equally, if you’re facing difficulties understanding lectures in class, you can just go on YouTube and watch videos of several people explaining the same thing and some in greater details for easy understanding. Scholars can share their research and add to the unending world of knowledge for students to benefit from. Today with the invention of smart phones, we can transfer documents and videos faster, type projects with our phones, send messages and communicate with others on our mobile phone devices and so much more via social media.

    Coming back to our present day reality in my country’s(Cameroon) University environs, you will find millions of student heads leaned forward with eyes glued to their phone screens. Looking at them from the perspective I viewed Steve’s videos, one will think they are all busy studying, engaging in online study groups, doing some online research or simply just checking out some cool educative content online, whereas in actual effect many aren’t. This got me thinking, do students in this part of the world and this generation don’t know how fortunate they have it now or are they just taking everything for granted?

    Well, the reality in my home Universities is that many students burn up valuable study time by spending hours engaging with their phones on Social media. Many just spend hours upon hours scrolling down the WhatsApp status, Facebook status, Telegram Status of their friends, family members and even their enemies. Others spend time watching unending videos on Snap chart, Facebook, YouTube, and the like. Majority just spend time discussing out of school topics with contacts and socializing. 

    Let’s pulse a little. I have mentioned the word Social Media over and over. What really is this social Media? It will be good that at this point I define to my readers the meaning of social media. 

    Generally, you may have thought of Social Media as a collective term to mean websites and all communication applications you have on your phone and other mobile devices which enable you interact with others online. Well you are not wrong although the actual definition of Social media is a lot more specific than the one I had mentioned above. According to the Oxford dictionary, Social Media refers to websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or participate in social networking. You can think of it from the stand point of Wikipedia to mean interactive technologies and digital channels that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, interests and other forms of expression through virtual communities and networks. Personally I would love to think of it as all forms of electronic communications through which we share information, ideas, personal messages, videos and the like; kind of what you do with Facebook, Instagram,WhatsApp,Twitter,Facetime,Telegram,Skype,IMO,ToTok, face Time, Emails, Websites, and the list goes on and on. You get the point now. 

    There you have it. Social media has always been around like that stubborn kid who refuses to leave your house even after turning forty despite the numerous family intervention meetings you’ve called up for himEver since the coming of the internet, people have been using social media; however, its use skyrocketed with the coming of the smart phones like the one Steve Jobs and his friends invented. The invention of the smart phones made Social media very accessible like putting a child’s toy on her bed where she sleeps every day.Now that we have cleared that lets get back to the students.

    In consuming all this valuable precious study time charting with friends, watching funny videos on TikTokFacebookFace Time, just to name a few, or just browsing the internet, actual learning time is reduced almost to nil. This has big implication on the performance of many students. Yes! Not every interaction and networking is helpful to one’s academic career. A greater portion of the networking students this part of the world do is in no way beneficial to their studies and this has serious disadvantages to them.

    First and foremost, several students fail to graduate their degree or post graduate programs and some who managed to graduate have delayed graduation. That is, some take up four to five years to finish up a program that normally would take three years to finish as they face difficulties concentrating in class or reading due to glued eyes on Social Media doing unproductive work. Many younger students have confessed openly to me that whenever they try to read they feel bored and sleepy and instead of reading they wind up time by spending several hours on their phones on social media charting and socializing. This distracts them from studying or concentrating on studies. Many students turn to lose focus on their studies and spend more time focusing on social media.

    Secondly, many have challenges differentiating real life from fiction or live online as they get sunk up into this whole other world of flashy lifestyles, competition, fame and popularity, and lots of exciting stuff on social media that they want to replicate it in their present day to day life – real life. That is to say many students want live out their online life style in real life; for example a lady who spends her time posing for pictures in every expensive restaurant she enters as she saw from a European girl she’s currently following on Instagram want to give her colleagues and friends she interacts with on a daily bases in class a feel of being that classy and expensive hot chick as she’s known online by trying to impress them by eating in some of the most expensive restaurants on campus and by so doing needs to have sexual relationships with several men to fuel this expensive lifestyle which she is now stuck with as a result from her engaging in social media. The end result is a generation of University students who want to get rich before actually graduating and getting a job or doing some form of business. The new order becomes social ills like smoking, excessive drinking, drugs, stealing to keep up with flashy lifestyles seen on Social Media and so on. 

    Hold up! Not all students who have their eyes glued on Social media actually get it tough academically or in life as a whole. It is worth mentioning that the social media to a student is sort of a mix blessing. A few students though haven used up most of their valuable learning time with regards to their university programs, still get educated informally on their passions and end up becoming really successful entrepreneurs after dropping out of School because of lack of focus on their academic careers. This is true as not everyone in the university actually loved or has passion for the program they are reading. Some decided to do the program because they had really low points in their high school or college result which in the case of Cameroon will be the General Advance Level Certificate examination (GCE A level) and as such couldn’t meet up with the entry requirement to do their dream programs. Others are forced by their parents whereas for many its peer pressure that led them into doing their current programs. A small percentage of students too aren’t really cut out for formal education and a lot of these students find or stumble upon what they love on Social Media and then stick to it. 

    The second category of students I will say are those who actually use Social Media for the purpose mentioned earlier when I spoke of Steve Jobs in my opening beginning paragraph; to learn and do research. Social Media is a valuable source of free information and keeping oneself up to date with current affairs of the world. It is a researcher’s paradise. You can actually learn a lot by using it the right way. And by right way I mean using it base on your specific need, stage of life and lifestyle. It’s a learning hub.
