The virus is spread through the air by coughing and sneezing, close personal contact, touching an object or surface contaminated with the virus. Adults of the age of fifty (50) years and above are more susceptible to contracting this deadly virus.

     

    1.1.2. BRIEF HISTORY

     

    ​As the name implies, Covid-19, this disease was first identified in the year 2019 in Wuhan; China, and it spread to other parts of China and around the world. President Donald Trump, one time president of the United States of American even often referred to it on the press as “The Chinese virus” as he blamed China for haven have started the spread of this virus according to him.

    ​Cameroon identifies its’ first Corona virus case on the 24th of February, 2020 on a fifty eight (58) years old French citizen who arrived in the Capital of Cameroon, Yaoundé. 

    1.2. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

     

    ​This disease has so many visible characteristics such as: fever, dry cough, tiredness, sore throat, headache, loss of taste and smell, body pains. Some serious symptoms of this virus are; difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, loss of speech or movement. It usually takes about five (5) to six (6) days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show, however, it can take even up to fourteen (14) days. 

    ​Corona virus is one of the most deadly disease in recent times which has recorded up to four million, one hundred and fifty four thousands and seven hundred and twenty nine (4,154,729) deaths worldwide, and one thousand three hundred and thirty four (1,334) cases in Cameroon precisely.

    ​Most people in the early stage of Covid-19 can be treated at home. The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the antiviral drug “Remdesivir”(veklury) which is a broad spectrum antiviral medication used to treat hospitalized infected patients. This drug is administered through the nasal route. Most people in the early stages of this illness can be treated with supportive care such as; pain relievers (Ibuprofen), Cough Syrup, enough rest, and much fluid intake, in order to relieve the symptoms.

     

    CASE STUDY: CAMEROON

    ​Everything was going on just fine not until we woke up one day with this sad news everywhere of COVID-19, a strange pandemic which had engulfed the whole world with sadness, hopelessness and confusion. Many people died due to this pandemic, everything changed. For instance, a decree was passed on by the president of the republic of Cameroon, President Paul Biya, that there should be no movement of cars or people, shut down of schools, no gatherings of more than fifty persons which may lead to the spread of the disease, obligatory wearing of face mask especially in public places and usage of hand sanitizers. It was such a difficult change because everything happened so fast. But because of our personal safety and the safety of our friends and love ones we had to scarifies and obey theses rules which affected the general public in so many ways;

    ➢ It reduce the income made by the taxi men since they were to carry limited number of passengers at a time as compared to before but unfortunately, this got to a point that for the taxi men to make up for their loss, the money asked was being doubled. For example a journey that was supposed to cost a hundred francs CFA costs two hundred francs CFA and so on.
    ➢ Wearing of face mask was compulsory everywhere especially in public places like in the market, churches, pharmacies, hospitals, banks, schools, offices…etc And it was highly controlled by the government authorities in charge. This was a good change as to prevent the spread of infections but many found the mask difficult to cope with as some complained of difficulties in breathing while putting it on.
    ➢ Hand sanitizers were highly used as it contained some level of disinfectant which enabled about ninety percent of bacteria to be killed and prevent the spread of infection through the hands.
    ➢ Hand washing was really encouraged throughout the country and buckets filled with clean water and liquid soap was made available in public places like markets. Churches, hospitals, offices and even some houses… etc to reduce the spread of the bacterial. Even handshaking and embracing were discouraged to prevent the spread of the bacteria.
    ➢ Not more than 50 persons in a gathering as the bacteria spreads so fast and people were called upon to practice social distancing by being at least one meter apart from each other in public places.

    Things became really tough as prices of food stuffs increased a great deal in the market as some people took advantage of the situation to make super profits or extraordinary gain. Some saw opportunities to make some extra income through the selling of face mask and hand sanitizers which had become high in demand due to the pandemic and the necessity for everyone to be found wearing one in public places.

     

    1.3. EFFECTS OF CORONA VIRUS

     

    1.3.1. Economic Effects

    ​The Covid-19 virus has taken a significant toll on the global economy due to lockdown measures aimed at reducing the spread, and as a result, a good number of people ended up jobless and sources of livelihood were lost; many have become unemployed as their source of lively hood had been taking away from them due to the measures put in place by the authorities to help limit the spread of the COVID-19

    Another consequence of this economic shutdown was the slow influx of cash to companies who were left with no choice than today off some of that workers leading to joblessness. Many restaurant and sea ports and resorts where forced to shut down for a while, it was no longer business as usual for many business enterprises as fewer and fewer people where allowed to buy at a time. Even malls and markets where not permitted to operate at full capacity.

    ​Also, the Covid-19 pandemic led to the disruption of international trade relations between countries due to the lockdown of international airports, seaports which halted importation and exportation of goods and services across the globe.Government income generated from the exportation and importation of goods and service had to weakness a rapid drop during this period.

    ​Moreover, the outbreak of this pandemic led to economic stagnation since government revenue was reduced since some activities such as; Tourism, enrollment fees for visas, concours” (French for state exams) and lotteries which provided funds for the development of the country’s economy.

    ​Also, lockdown of markets, cinemas, music venues such as open air shows, theatres, night clubs lead to the cancelling of music festivals, concerts, hence film production industries were at a loss as films, had to be moved online for the audience with no significant ways for the industries to  regain their investment.

    ​The transport sector also suffered greatly from this pandemic as people were scared and even in some countries restricted to travel at the risk of contamination. Those that had the courage to travel made the transportation companies to take costly safety measures like leaving the plains, taxis, buses half full in order to ensure the safety of passengers.In Cameroon for example people were discourage from using moto-bikes due to the very close proximity between the passenger and driver leading to a very high risk of infection, this affected bike riders whose sole source of income is carrying people on their bikes from one location to another.

     

     

     

    1.3.2. POLITICAL EFFECT

     

    ​The outbreak of this Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the international system and activities such as elections, political rallies, some countries like Gabon had to conduct elections twice due to the increase in rigging since people did not come out to vote.

    ​Also some international feasts like woman’s day, Labor, Youth day march pass in Cameroon was cancelled. All activities of which used to keep the youths and the citizens engaged but now they are compelled to stay at home which was heavily frowned upon especially by the youths.

    ​During the crisis, government of some countries,were under pressure from their citizens who expected them to take bold and fast measures in fighting against the disease; this lead to government taking harsh decision such as lockdown, social distancing etc.

     

    1.3.3. SOCIAL EFFECT

    Societies generally are made of more than 70% in the poverty bracket and as such, many average income earning families found it extremely difficult caring for their families and love ones for a long time during the lock down as many became practically unemployed because of the measures taken by governments to help curb the spread of the virus. The world saw an increase in death rates with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic partly due to hunger since markets and business were located.  Also, there were early cases of infection due to the fact that no cure had been yet been found.

    ​Stigmatization and insecurity among people exist due to the Corona virus outbreak. Families with infected cases were often isolated by the community due to fear of infection leading to suspicion of one another and insecurity. As a matter of fact, coughing was greatly frowned upon as people will immediatelycondemn and judge you to be someone suffering from the disease. The issue of isolation was not easy especially for families who had once before now been used to being together now forced to be isolated from the rest if you showed signs and symptoms of this virus infection.

    ​Families who lost members were left in great psychological pain, as they were not even allowed to mourn their loved because the body of the infected deceased person had to be buried or burnt almost immediately without family intervention in order to prevent the spread of the virus. This was greatly felt by many but more particularly African countries such as Cameroon where it is a culture to bury the dead and hold dead ceremonies in honor of their deceased one. This could no longer be the case and it brought dissatisfaction to those who mourned their lost ones during this period of the pandemic.

     

    1.4. PREVENTIVE MEASURES

    It is often said and believed by many that ‘prevention is better than cure’ and this was clearly the case when it came to the Corona virus pandemic as getting an immediate cure to the disease was farfetched. 

    With the outbreak of this disease, some preventive measures have been put in place to reduce the spread of the virus. Some of them are; maintaining at least six (6) feet of distance between yourself and others, wearing of face masks, avoiding large gatherings, avoiding close contacts with people who are sick, minimize touching the eyes, nose and mouth, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue then throw the tissue in a trash can, washing of hands often with clean water and soap, amongst many others.

     

    1.5. CONCLUSION

    Never has a pandemic claimed as many lives as COVID-19 deed so far in history and at such a fast pace. The rapid spread was almost like an atomic explosion as just within the space of days, weeks, months and years; the virus had already spread across the world.
